SCAG Toolbox Tuesdays: Bicycle Planning and Facilities Implementation

Bicycle planning and the implementation of bicycle lanes, trails and “experimental” facilities is becoming a fixture in cities throughout Southern California. As a result, the dollars invested in bicycle planning are expected to increase dramatically in the near future. Approximately $6.7 billion is allocated for active transportation in the 2012-2035 Regional Transportation Plan/Sustainable Communities Strategy, which is an increase of more than 270 percent over the commitments made in the 2008 RTP.

The amount of money allocated for active transportation indicates that bicycle planning and engineering will continue to grow in importance as limited street right of way will be redesigned for a complete streets future. Some of the bigger questions that are being addressed now include: how are the plans going to be implemented, where do cities attain funding to implement their bicycle plans, what engineering is involved, how do cities measure effectiveness of the investment? Learn from regional bicycle planning and engineering experts as they share their experiences and help try to answer some of these questions.
