Free Metro Gold Line Art Tour Leads to Self Help Graphics’ Legendary Day of the Dead Celebration in Boyle Heights Nov. 2

Celebrate life (and death) with Metro on a special Day of the Dead themed art tour on Sunday, Nov. 2. The free, one-night-only tour will explore artworks in the Metro system through the lens of artist Consuelo Flores. The tour will depart at 4:30 p.m. from the Metro Gold Line East LA Civic Center Station and end at 6 pm. at Self Help Graphics’ 41st Annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration.

The tour will include visits to Alejandro De la Loza’s El Nino Perdido at Mariachi Station and Clement Hanami’s Through the Looking Glass or traveling at the Speed of Light (Rail) at the East LA Civic Center Station, among others. The tour will end at Self Help Graphics’ Día de los Muertos celebration at Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez Learning Center, located at 1200 Plaza Del Sol E in Boyle Heights near Pico/Aliso Station. TAP card holders will be able to save 10% on artwork at the Self Help Graphics Día de los Muertos Celebration.

The tour is approximately 90% walking. There are elevators and escalators in all of the stations, and only Mariachi Station is underground.

Consuelo Flores is an established poet, writer, mixed media, installation and performance artist. She is respected for her understanding and promotion of the true celebration of the Day of the Dead (DOD). She is a lecturer, narrative writer and visual artist of DOD-themed work including, academic presentations, prose, poetry, fashions and site-specific Ofrendas/Altares. Her dedicated work contributes to the cultural awareness of the Day of the Dead as well as a personal means to commemorate her dead in a meaningful and joyous celebration of life.

Metro Art Moves Tours

Artist led tours are designed to attract new riders through arts-based transit experiences. The tours highlight Metro’s diverse collection of artworks, heighten the passenger experience in fun and engaging ways to boost public perceptions about transit, promote rider etiquette and offer opportunities for discovery. Metro Art Program

Metro Art implements the agency’s percent for art program, manages the care and maintenance of the system’s existing artworks and directs a volunteer docent council. From rail and bus stations to construction fences and poetry cards, art creates a sense of place and engages transit riders.

Since 1989, Metro has commissioned artists to incorporate artworks into a wide array of transportation projects throughout Los Angeles County. The agency has received numerous design and artistic excellence awards, and is renowned for its approaches to integrating art into the transit experience, and for engaging artists at all levels of their careers.
